La lagune Nkomi, un territoire à découvrir The Nkomi Lagoon, a land to discover

Ogooué-Maritime · Gabon

Forests, lagoon, mangroves and islands: the region is home to remarkable wildlife, only part of which has been studied so far. We want to work with researchers and institutions who wish to advance knowledge and protection of Gabon’s biodiversity.

Pourquoi la lagune Nkomi ?Why the Nkomi Lagoon?

Un territoire riche, à mieux connaîtreA rich land, waiting to be better known

Dense forests, lagoon, mangroves and islands form a mosaic of habitats here. Between 2018 and 2021, a camera-trap study led by Chester Zoo* with IRET/CENAREST and local villagers revealed a remarkably rich mammal fauna.

Every year, a colony of fruit bats stays for about three months on an island in the lagoon, a phenomenon still little studied.

Birds, reptiles, fish and plants are still to be surveyed: many avenues for new research.

Every year, a colony of fruit bats stays for about three months on an island in the lagoon. This seasonal phenomenon, still little studied, raises important questions about pathogen circulation and interactions with local wildlife, at the heart of the One Health approach.

PrimatologiePrimatologyConservation

Western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees share the lagoon’s forests. Monitoring their populations, behaviour and use of the land helps guide conservation action in the region.

A first survey recorded the region’s mammals. Birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and plants are still to be documented: every survey adds to our knowledge of a land of great scientific and natural value.

Forests, lagoon and mangroves form a whole in which each habitat depends on the others. Monitoring indicators would make it possible to track how these habitats change in response to human activity and climate.
